Q.
|
1.
What does the terminology Primus, Classic Primus and Everest
Primus refer to? |
| A. |
Prior to
the introduction of Everest Primus, Schlage offered a high security
cylinder compatible with our Classic keyways. This single offering
was simply referred to as Primus. Since the introduction of
Everest Primus, Schlage began referring to this original product
as Classic Primus to help differentiate the two products. The
new product, Everest Primus, incorporates a new set of patented
keyways with the already proven Primus technology. The terms
Classic and Everest describe the family of keyways that the
product uses and the term Primus refers to the side bitting,
finger pin and side bar mechanisms. |

Q.
|
2.
Why is Everest Primus better than your competitors' products? |
| A. |
Everest
Primus is covered by four utility patents in the US alone, which
means that you have four layers of assurance that your keys
can't be made and distributed by other manufacturers. Unlike
many competitors' products that have cumbersome pinning procedures,
require special key machines, and have keys that take extra
time to cut, Everest Primus products can be combinated using
commonly available pin kits and key cutting equipment. Schlage
offers more key control solutions to help you customize your
level of security to meet your budget and your needs. In the
Everest family alone, you can choose Everest Open, Everest Restricted,
Everest Primus, Everest Primus UL or a combination of these
products to customize your security. Outstanding products combined
with the excellent sales, service and support are just some
of the ways that Ingersoll Rand and Schlage continue to be your Proven Source
for Proven Solutions. |

Q.
|
3.
Is Everest Primus better than Classic Primus? |
| A. |
While there
are many similarities between Classic Primus and Everest Primus,
there are some differences as well. Both products provide excellent
pick resistance and a means to help control unauthorized key
duplication. Since Classic Primus can be keyed in to existing
Classic key systems, Classic Primus is still commonly used for
key system upgrades. If you are installing a new system, we
recommend Everest Primus. Everest Primus is protected by a total
of four utility patents (vs. two for Classic Primus) that give
us legal exclusivity to make this product through the year 2014
(vs. 2007 for Classic Primus). These patents allow us to control
the distribution of keys and provide a dealer or end user with
geographic exclusivity on Primus keys. Another difference between
Everest Primus and Classic Primus is that Everest Primus uses
a larger key bow that provides you with additional space to
stamp information and makes the keys easier to handle. |

Q.
|
6.
Do Primus keys require special key cutting equipment? |
| A. |
Since Primus
keys use the same cut depths and spacing as our non-Primus full
size (non-SFIC) keys, most customers can use their existing
key cutting equipment to cut Primus keys. Both Classic Primus
and Everest Primus can be cut on commonly available rotary (keys
cut by a spinning cutting wheel) key cutting machines designed
to cut Schlage keys. Classic Primus and Everest Primus C Family
(keyways designated by a C followed by three numbers) keys can
also be cut on a punch machine designed to cut Schlage keys.
Older Blue Punch machines may require a jaw upgrade, which can
be purchased from Schlage or your key machine manufacturer.
Everest D Family (keyways designated by a D followed by three
numbers) should be cut on rotary key machines to reduce key
bending and burrs. |

Q.
|
7.
Do I need special tools or pin kits to service Primus? |
| A. |
No. Since
Primus cylinders use the same top pin depths and spacing as
Schlage's non-Primus cylinders, there is no need to buy a special
pin kit to key Primus cylinders. Most customers order cylinders
prepinned to their specific side bitting, however if you need
the recombinate the side bitting combination in the field, Schlage
recommends purchasing the 40-070 Primus pin kit. |

Q.
|
8.
Can I put Primus in a competitor's lock? |
| A. |
Classic Primus
and Everest Primus are both available in a wide variety of formats
to fit both Schlage and competitor locksets. Primus cylinders
are available to fit most competitors' mortise locks as well
as most Corbin Russwin, Yale, and Sargent cylindrical locksets.

Q.
|
10.
What is the difference between the UL and non-UL versions of
Primus? |
| A. |
The primary
function of the UL437 standard is to certify that a cylinder
is both pick resistant and drill resistant. Primus UL437 Listed
cylinders have a series of hardened steel drill pins added to
our already pick resistant Primus cylinders. Since this adds
cost to the cylinder for a feature that many of our customers
don't require, Schlage leaves the cylinder choice up to you. |
| |

Q.
|
11.
Can Everest Primus UL and non-UL cylinders be used in the same
key system? |
| A. |
Yes. The
drill pins added to provide UL approved drill resistance do
not affect the function of the cylinder, therefore you can mix
UL and non-UL approved Everest Primus cylinders in the same
key system. |

Q.
|
12.
Is Primus available in SFIC? |
| A. |
No. Customers
currently on unpatented SFIC key systems should consider an
Everest Restricted SFIC key system to meet their key control
needs. |

Q.
|
13.
I am an end user of products. How do I place an order for Primus? |
| A. |
Schlage only
accepts orders for Primus products from authorized Primus dealers.
Your authorized Primus dealer can place an order directly with
Schlage. Once a Primus key system has been established, your
dealer may ask you to provide additional documentation such
as a signed Face Sheet or an ID card to confirm that you are
authorized to order Primus keys. |

Q.
|
14.
I am a locksmith or dealer. How do I place an order for Primus? |
| A. |
All locksmiths
and dealers wishing to sell Primus must be approved by Schlage
and must sign a contract with Schlage or a Schlage wholesaler.
The contract, among other things, requires the locksmith to
safeguard Primus key blanks and restrict the issuance of keys
only to authorized individuals. Once this contract is signed,
dealers and locksmiths can order product by specifying the part
number and the desired Primus (Classic or Everest) keyway. Like
Conventional Classic and Everest cylinders, almost all Classic
Primus and Everest Primus products share the same part number.
Classic Primus and Everest Primus keys have distinct part numbers
because of the significant variation on key bow shape. Consult
your Schlage Price Book for the necessary key part numbers. |

Q.
|
15.
What are Primus "Levels"? |
| A. |
Primus levels
define how much exclusivity has been granted and to whom it
has been granted. Generally speaking, the higher your Primus
level, the more exclusivity you have. Levels 1 through 4 are
Classic Primus levels. Levels 7 through 9 are Everest Primus
.
In a Level 1 system all Primus locksmiths have access to the
same keyblanks. Level 1+ and Level 7 keys are exclusive to a
large dealer, such as a wholesaler and are resold through authorized
locksmiths. Each Level 1+ or Level 7 locksmith is assigned a
unique ID number that is stamped on his or her keys and is only
permitted to duplicate keys for systems having keys bearing
his or her unique ID number (after verifying that the keyholder
is permitted to obtain duplicate keys). Level 2 and 8 systems
grant exclusivity to a large dealer that sells directly to end-users.
Level 3, 4 and 9 systems provide end users with keys that are
exclusive to their facility. With end user exclusivity, the
amount of exclusivity granted depends on the amount of product
purchased. |
| |
Back
to the top |
Q.
|
16.
What types of end user exclusivity are available? |
| A. |
For systems
of less than 60 cylinders, Schlage randomly assigns the side
bitting from a small pool of "Universal" side bittings. If your
order consists of 60 or more cylinders, Schlage can offer keys
that are geographically exclusive to you based on the first
two digits of your zip code.Very large facilities (2,000 or
more cylinders and up) may qualify for time zone or nationwide
exclusivity, depending on their purchase commitment. |
| |
Back
to the top |
Q.
|
17.
Can other locksmiths or dealers be authorized to sell Primus
is my area? |
| A. |
Schlage offers many exclusivity options
to meet your needs. If you sign up for an Everest Primus Level
8 system which offers a dealer an exclusive side bitting within
his or her time zone, no other
dealer in your time zone can purchase product from Schlage.
If you are choosing to sell a Level 1+ or Level 7 system,
your wholesaler or security dealer has primary control over
who is permitted to sell product. Schlage's decision to approve
or disapprove a dealer's recommendation is based on the sellers'
track record and ability to sell and service Schlage customers.

| |

Q.
|
18.
If I am currently a Classic Primus dealer, can I get the same
side bitting when I order Everest Primus? |
| A. |
If your Classic
Primus side bitting has a shallow cut near the tip of the key
bow, Schlage may be able to assign you the same Everest Primus
combination. Schlage will only regularly assign Everest Primus
combinations with shallow side bitting cuts near the tip of
the key to ensure that Everest Primus keys used to operate conventional
Everest cylinders will lift the Everest check pin. |
| |

Q.
|
19.
Is Primus patented? |
| A.
|
Yes.
Classic Primus is covered by two U.S. utility patents through
the year 2007. Everest Primus is covered by these two patents
plus 2 additional U.S. utility patents that are valid through
the year 2014. Patents in Canad, Mexico and several other countries
also cover Primus products. Note: Utility patents are very important
for patented key systems because they cover the functionality
of a product rather that just an aesthetic look of a product.
|
| |
Back
to the top |
Q.
|
20.
Why is it important for a patented key system to be covered
by multiple patents? |
| A.
|
Multiple
patents provide layers of security. Each patent is a barrier
that prevents other manufacturers from legally making our patented
keys. The more barriers we have, the less likely it is that
another manufacturer will be able to make our patented keys
that would compromise Schlage's distribution exclusivity. While
it may seem odd, other manufacturers have sold patented key
systems to customers only to have the single patent protecting
their produt later deemed invalid. When this happened, keys
became readily available and the ability to control unauthorized
key duplication was lost. Schlage uses the barrier of multiple
U.S. utility patents to provide you with layers of security
that protect you from this risk. |
| |

Q.
|
21.
Why doesn't Everest Primus have a check pin like Everest? |
| A. |
The check
pin in a conventional Everest cylinder is designed to check
for the patented side material on the key. In an Everest Primus
cylinder the five finger pins are used to check for this material. |
| |
Back
to the top |
Q.
|
22.
Why can't dealers and locksmiths stock Everest Primus in Everest
D keyways? |
| A. |
In conventional
(non-Primus) cylinders, Everest D keyways are sold as restricted
keyways. This means that Everest D keys are only shipped to
an address specified by an end user and that these keys are
not commercially available to be stocked by locksmiths. Since
Everest Primus keys in Everest D keyways will operate Everest
conventional cylinders, allowing them to be stocked would deteriorate
the security we currently offer to facilities with restricted
conventional key systems. |
| |
Back
to the top |
Q.
|
23.
Are Everest Primus key systems using Everest D Family keyways
more secure than those using Everest C Family keyways? |
| A. |
No. If you
choose end user exclusivity the side-milling pattern for your
keys is geographically exclusive to you based on your purchase
commitment. This means that your side bitting is exclusive to
you and cannot be stocked by a locksmith or security dealer
without your written consent. This is true regardless of whether
you choose an Everest C Family or an Everest D Family Everest
Primus key system. |
| |

Q.
|
24.
Can I generate a large master key system with Everest Primus? |
| A. |
Yes. Schlage
offers ten "base" keyways (base keys only enter base keyway
cylinders) in two different families of keyways, the Everest
C Family and the Everest D Family. Each of these families has
"hierarchy" keyways (hierarchy keys will enter multiple base
keyway cylinders) that are often used as master keys. While
master key system design and cross keying greatly affect the
number of usable combinations, the maximum theoretical size
of an Everest Primus master key system is 40,960 combinations
(4,096 combinations times 10 keyways) under a single top master
key. Only extremely large facilities should ever require such
a high number of combinations. Although Schlage has other solutions
for these large facilities, we typically recommend that large
facilities consider having multiple master key systems to prevent
putting an entire facility at risk if a top master key is lost
or stolen. |

Q.
|
25.
Is there a 5-pin version of Everest Primus available? |
| A. |
No. Everest
Primus is intended to provide additional security as well as
a means to help control key duplication. 5-pin systems only
offer a limited number of combinations and are not compatible
with the security that Primus systems are intended to provide.
Schlage discourages the use of Primus cylinders when only 5-pin
chambers are being used. |

Q.
|
26.
Can I upgrade my existing key system to Primus? |
| A. |
Facilities
currently using Everest C Family or Everest D Family conventional
(non-Primus) keyways can upgrade sensitive areas of their facilities
to Everest Primus and still maintain a single master key to
the facility. Everest Primus keys can operate Everest cylinders,
but not visa versa. This means that you can gain control of
sensitive areas of your facility such as exterior doors, offices
of key personnel, and computer rooms by simply replacing the
cylinders with Everest Primus cylinders and issuing Everest
Primus keys only to authorized individuals. Customers using
Classic key systems (C, CE, E, EF, F, FG and Quad keyways) can
upgrade their key systems in a similar manner with Classic Primus. |

Q.
|
27.
What is an ID Card? |
| A. |
Schlage dealers
use ID Cards to ensure that only the individuals you authorize
are allowed to obtain keys for your facility. If a local locksmith
or dealer manages your system, you probably have an ID card.
This ID card is used much like a credit card. To request additional
keys, you must present this ID card to your security professional
and they will compare your signature to the one on the card
to verify that you are permitted to purchase keys. Some security
professionals keep a list of authorized signatures on file rather
than requiring you to present your ID card each time you need
keys, so don't be worried if your dealer does not require you
to present an ID card. |

Q.
|
28.
What is a Face Sheet? |
| A. |
Orders for
end user Level keys and cylinders can be purchased through several
different security professionals. To ensure security in end
user key systems, the Schlage factory verifies your ability
to order product. When your Primus system is set up, you provide
us with a signature card that is signed by all individuals authorized
to place Primus orders on your behalf. Face Sheets are requests
to order product for your facility that bear an original signature.
Face Sheets are compared to the Signature Card we have on file
before your order is processed. For your security, a Face Sheet
must accompany every order you place. |
| |

Q.
|
29.
Can I fax the Face Sheet with my order? |
| A.
|
No.
Signatures can be easily photocopied and put on a Face Sheet
without your knowledge. Since we cannot detect this fraud on
faxes, we only accept Face Sheets that have an original signature
on them. |
| |

Q.
|
30.
If I am a current Primus user, how do I get more keys? |
| A. |
If you have
an ID Card for your system, the dealer or locksmith whose name
appears on the card controls the issuance of keys for your facility.
If you have an end user (Level 3, 4, or 9) key system, Schlage
verifies the signature on all orders for your facility. Any
authorized Schlage distributor can submit an order to Schlage
requesting keys to your facility.A Face Sheet bearing an original
signature of someone pre-authorized to order keys for your facility
must accompany all orders for end user level products. Once
Schlage verifies that you have authorized the order to be placed,
the order can be processed. Keys can only be shipped to an address
that has been designated by your facility based on the Signature
Card we have on file. If you don't know what level your system
is or who your dealer is, Contact Us
for assistance. |

Q.
|
31.
If I have an end user system, how can I change who is authorized
to order keys? |
| A.
|
To
add or remove authorized signatories or shipping addresses,
a new Signature Card must be submitted and signed by the individual
pre-authorized to make these changes. End user systems (Levels
3, 4, and 9) require a Signature Card to be submitted when the
order is first established. The Signature Card contains signatures
of all of the individuals you have authorized to order keys
for your facility, addresses that you will allow us to ship
keys to, and the name of an individual who is authorized to
make changes to the Signature Card. |
